Learning to hold a knife the way I hold a pencil let me enter a different world — one where an order slowly emerges out of disorder. That, I have come to think, is what imagination and creativity really are. Painting did not pull me away from the work; it gave the same mind new routes to think along — and it gave me courage, the willingness to commit a line that cannot be undone, and to believe.
